background

L.E. Thiele Consulting is an engineering consulting and software development company formed in 1991 under the ownership and operation of Larry E. Thiele as its principal engineer. The primary focus of the company's business has been the electric utility industry.

Mr. Thiele received BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin, USA in 1968 and 1972 respectively, where he specialized in computer applications for power systems analysis. His initial experience developing power application software came during an internship with American Electric Power Service Corporation working under Glen W. Stagg.

From 1968-1971, he held the position of planning engineer with Wisconsin Public Service Corporation, Green Bay, Wisconsin, responsible for performing generation and transmission planning studies.

From 1971-1972, Mr. Thiele served as a lecturer and instructor in electrical engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin.

From 1972-1975, Mr. Thiele was a systems analyst and programmer with Commonwealth Edison Company, Chicago, Illinois, developing generation and transmission planning software projects. A major portion of his responsibility involved developing large network theory into fault analysis and load flow analysis software and optimizing software designs to achieve high speed solutions.

From 1975-1991, Mr. Thiele headed up the system planning area at Wisconsin Public Service Corporation, Green Bay, Wisconsin, directing all of the company's long range electric utility generation and transmission planning efforts. This involved extensive experience in generation production costing and electric power flow analyses, need analyses, construction budgeting, developing statewide plans for Wisconsin's Advance Plan generation planning process, and serving as an expert witness in Advance Plan regulatory proceedings, facility licensing proceedings, and rate case proceedings. He was also involved in power supply contracting, interconnection contracting, and transmission use negotiations. He supervised a staff of eight engineering professionals and several technicians and served on several intercompany planning committees and task forces and the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) System Planning Committee.

During 1994-1996, L.E. Thiele Consulting developed for ENTEC Consulting (company subsequently purchased by Henwood Energy Services) one of the USA's first commercial electric power trading and brokering software products, including processes for scheduling, tracking, balancing, path selection, billing, reporting, performance analysis, and contact logging. This software was used by several of the country's top twenty-five power marketing organizations.

From 1997-present L.E. Thiele Consulting's business has included software development services, completion of the ATRAC transmission power flow software now distributed worldwide as free-to-use public domain software, providing independent third party assessment and verification of transmission power flow simulation analyses, providing expert witness services in electric utility regulatory proceedings, and performing energy research.

Mr. Thiele is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and is a licensed professional engineer in the State of Wisconsin, USA.
